Having diabetes doesn’t mean you have to put your life on hold.  Although, it may take some extra preparation when planning a trip, you don’t have to let it be a constant concern or make traveling a daunting task.  Depending on how severe your case is, you may just want to get a full check up from your doctor before taking anything longer than a weekend getaway.  Once you have the results of that, you two together can come up with a plan to keep your case of diabetes under control while you’re away.  This will consist of an eating plan and what you should stay away from.  It will tell you if you should take your medicines on the same schedule as normal and what to do if you experience anything out of the norm that may seem like an emergency.  In case you do have an emergency, you should wear your medical ID bracelet at all times.

You should do some extra planning before you leave as far as making sure there are meals you can eat where you are going to be.  If you’re flying you should bring snacks that are approved for your meal plan, as airlines don’t offer the widest or healthiest selections these days.  You should also make sure you have enough medicine to get through the trip, if meds are required, and enough for a few days when you get home so you’re not rushing to get a re-fill.

It’s usually best to stick to countries that speak your language in case you run into any problems.  You don’t want to put yourself at risk because no one understands what the problem is.  If you do need/want to travel outside of your native language country, just be sure to check that there is an English-speaking doctor around (if English is your first language).  It would be good for you to learn a few key phrases in the language of the country you are visiting just in case.  Two great examples are “I have diabetes” and “Orange juice, please” in case your blood sugar is low.
